May 2011: Mariam is 11 years old and wants to be a lawyer when she grows up. She loves skipping and is from the Tororo region of Uganda. Mariam lives with her mom, dad, 2 brothers, and 4 sisters. Onyango Alex is in P2, Namyero Sharon and Atyeno Sylvia are in top class, and Okumo Francis is in baby class. Then there is Namyenge Agness and Awino Alen (both girls) who are too little to go to school. Their house is made of bricks and it has two rooms, with an outdoor kitchen. Despite her tiny size, Mariam is sassy and isn't scared of anyone! She is best friends with Nyaketcho Sylvia and they hold hands wherever they go. This month Mariam received a school sweater (which you can see in the photo, she is on the right) and was given medication for de-worming. She also took part in 2 field trips. She was able to take a boat ride on the Nile River, and went to Wonder World, an amusement park.
